David Maxfield residing in Nort Independence is critically ill He had a stroke of paralysis some time ago and has never recovered Mr. Maxfield is past seventy-five years of a ge. Asa and Lee Robinson have rented a hop yard of John Burton, one and a half miles north of town. Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and Lee have taken up their abode at the hop yard, to be near their work. A driving horse was purchased from a gentleman n,ear Parker station. M. Mix shipped another draft horse to Frazier on consignment yesterday. Jacob Gilpin, wife and son Sam Gilpin, arrived Saturday night from Santa Cruz, Cal., and will probably locate here permanently. The first named are the parents, the latter the brother of T. J. Gil pin of thi& city. Their home is in Illinois though they have spent the past two years in southern California. They are favorably impressed with the prospects here and will likely become citizens of Independence or vicinity. Mr. William Mc Adams, the vocal soloist will sing Iwtwwn sots in "A Craiy Idea." Hon. J. S, Cooper, of Independ ent1, was in the city yesterday foi the purpose of buying a couple o teams for his hop farms near Inde pendenc?. Albany Herald. REVIVAL MEETINGS Thm revival meetings at the Methodist church are in progress with large attendance and much interest is being taken. This week is the climax, and there will special sermons every night, Several conversions have been made. Tonight the pastor will answer elx questions he reefived n an anonymous letter. Social Heading: Club The young ladies social " reading club of this city was most pleas antly entertained Saturday night by Miss Louise Waller and Miss Maude Iliff at the latter's home. During the evening a business meeting was called for the purpose of reorganizing the club, of making new rules and by-laws and the election of officers for the coming year. The newly elected officers are: Mrs. Kate Walker, President; Miss Kate Jones, Secretary; Miss Mira Kimberlin, Treasurer; Mrs. LulaDornsife, Vice Pres. Davidson came home from Portland Thursday to join her husband who is engaged in farming again. He has rented land near Buena Vista on tbe east side of the river. Mrs. D. M. Calbreath, an old resident of this place is lying seriously ill at the hospital in Salem, ' Wm. Fuqua has a telephone line being completed Monday. Mrs. Kerr was an Indepen dence visitor Friday. Calbreath was taken sick Friday, Drs Butler and Crow ley were summoned and pro nounced her case a serious one. The following morning she was taken to the Salem Hospital.
