Leslie Scott, in his has! round up of the situation for the I oira use, and accoraiug sDirit of the law. "Much of Oregon has been developed just through the land Jaws having been construed so as to permit the taking of lands by clerks and others who are making their living when they make the declaration, by town work, and perhaps never see the Und except for a few days and mVhta each year, until they have the patent. Then they hold the land for a brief time and let it go to the one who will the nearest its value. In these cases there is no fraud. TV,a lnrl is for the use of the homesteader even if he only sells it after proving up on it.'' This man shows in his inter view,, some fear of Mr. Heney, the government prosecutor, and he brings out what effects a great many people in Marion and Polk counties as well as every other county in the state, namely: that a great many young men and women and old- er ones too nave laneu up claims and endeavored in most cases at least to live up to the letter of the law by putting up some kind of improvement and seeing the land twice a year. This paper has heard of no cases in this county or in Mar ion, where forgeries were com mitted, fictitious signatures se cured or affidavits made as rank those in the 11-' cases. Oregonian, places Polk county's senator with the KuykenrfaTF bunch. This is not exactly cor rect for .Senator J-oughary hns not allied himself with eitner erqwd. He is in that position that leaves him free to assist any candidate that offers most in the way of chairmanship of com mittees. According to tbe tre gonian's size-up, Knykendall will have 12, and Carter 10 in can- cus, leaving lure? uuuuuu, The doubtful ones are Croison and Hobson' of Marion and Not tingham of Multnomah. But Croison and Hobson are not for the Booth-Kelly candidate unless the offer in committee chairman ships far exceeds what may be had by supporting another can didate. Neither do Nottingham and Lougbary owe support w the bis? timber . syndicate's can didate and Dr. Kuykendall's election to the senate is by no means assured. The Multnomah delegation has brought out banker A. L. Mills as a candidate for speaker of the lower house. Banker Mills for speaker of the house president of the senate would make creditable presiding offi cers. If elected, they will con duct the two branches of the legislature along business rather than political lines. If there is anything the Ore gonian should know to an abso lute certainty it is that no man can relv upon the support of Geo. C. Brownell.
