tion. Leslie, of .course, pub
lished in the Oregonian, (with
adroit reserve between the lines)
the news that Dr. Kuykendall
had the election sure and was
serenely awaiting tne assem
bling of the legislature, the ap
plause of a listening senate to
command. With this expres
sibn of confidence, the West
Side Enterprise takes issue and
defies the Doctor to evidence
to warrant the claim that he
can secure the support of a ma
jority of the numbers of the
senate. Dr. KtiykendaH, or his
friends, have also had circu
lated through the press the an
nouncement that he is the can
didate of Senators Mitchell and
Fulton. Again this paper takes
issue and defies the Doctor to
have the two or either of the
United States Senators say they
prefer his promotion over other
friends they have in the Senate.
The fact is E. V. Carter, who is
a prominent candidate, sup
ported Senator Fulton when he
was a candidate for the United
States Senate as well as did Dr.
Kuykendall.' Through the sup
port of Senator Fulton, Carter
has as much claim on Senator
Mitchell as Kuykendall has.
As between the two candidates,
Carter is much more popular
among the senators and the in
terests of Oregon would be
much better subserved with Car
ter as president of the senate
than with Kuykendall. There
is a strong disposition among
Oregon republicans to bury fac
tional politics and politicians
and the opportunity is promi
nently before the State Senate.
The election of Carter will mean
the organization of the legisla
ture on a business basis; of
Kuykendall on a political basis.
Carter is better qualified for the
place. Four years ago, when
he was sent to the legislature
for the first time, he was elected
speaker and was conceded to be
a model presiding officer. At
the special session following, he j
again served with unanimous!
satisfaction. He is absolutely!
inapproachable to schemers and j
jobbers. In his decisions as!
Speaker he was just, and his
appointment of committees wasi
made with an eye single to the !
state's interests. He retired
from the legislature a popular 5
man and with a vote of thanks !;
