MARTIN E. ROBINSON
Director of Bclihuraf
Nsver before in the history of In
dependence has there been such a
general awakening of interest in
musical circles as has been shown
since the coming of Mr. Robinson
to prodo.ee this spectacular sacred
opera. It was at first understood
tbat the greater number of per
formers would be selected from
among the children, as was the
case when- "Queen Esther" was
produced here last - spring; but
such 5b not the case. Only four
children will take part, (as pages)
the balance of the cast and chorus
being composed entirely ef the. beet
singers in. this Vicinity. A large
chorus is very desirable for the pro
duction of such an opera as , Bel-
Lahazzar, and all who are taking
part are enthusiaatio in their praise
of the masterly way in which Mr.
Robinson is preparing ..this for the
pUbliC .' ; " ? -
Within the past four years Mr.
Robinson has given Queen Esther
and Belshazzar over 150 times in
the principal cities of Montana,
idaho, WaehingtonV and v Oregon
and in every instance the press
speaks of it as being the best pro
duction ever given in tbat city by
local talent And this will be the
case in Independence The entire
cast and chorus will be costumed
in bright and beautiful oriental
robes and the stage pictures and
groupings will be made most at
tractive. Two beautiful drills are
being prepared and will be intro
duced at the Feast Scene, and
those who have seen the rehearsals
of these say they are the finest ever
seen here. The entire cast, with
the exception ot the King, will be
made up from Independence's most
popular singers, but for the char
acter of Belshazzar has been se
cured the best bass of Salem, Mr.
George Curtis Lee Snyder. '
i Mr. Snvder is considered one of
the best baflses in. Oregon. He was
engaged, to sing illustrated Bongs
in one of Portland's most popular
theatres, and has only - recently
sung the part, of Belshazzar at the
production of this opera in Salem,
where the papers spoke in the
highest terms of praise of hie ren
dition of the part The dates for
the production have been set for
Dec. 21 and 22 at the opera house
at which time the opera - will be
given complete each evening. '

FREIGHT RAISED
CEASE JPRIBUTE
Possible to Avoid Tribute'Lev
icd by Private Corporation
on Valley Produce
Act of Congress, all that Is Necea-
sary Is the Opinion of District
Attorney John Hall j
"I am thoroughly convinced that
if authorized by Congress the Uni
ted Slates would have authority to
conntruct at Oregon City Falls, be
tween high and low water mark,
locks and canals and other im
provements, and that if it should
reeolt in injury to the riparian
owners or to the canals and locks
owned by private individual, that.
while their damage might be very
great, they would have no remedy
again the United States. If,
however, it should become neces-
sary in the construction ot sucn
work by the Government Ao utilize
the land of private individuals
above high-water mark, such land
would have to be acquired by con
demnation.". The above is the report of Uni
ted States District Attorney John
Hall, upon the legal power of the
General Government to construct
locks and canal at Oregon City on
the epposite side of the river from
the canal owned and operated by
the Portland General Electric Com
pany. It's a matter of great im
portance to every shipper, eyery
producer, every citizen of the Wil
lamette Valley.; It waa recently
pointed out' by this paper, how
every ton of freight going out of
this-valley pays to transportation
companies a tribute of 50 cents;
every passenger or head of cattle or
horses 10 cents and so on. It was
noted that individual hop growers
pav , in addition to the ordinary
freight charges, $35 to $50 tribute
to the Oregon City locks.
People of the Willamette valley
have been sleeping on their rights t
in this matter.' All that is neces
sary to circumvent this tribute up
on the people of the Willamette
valley, by a private corporation, is
in Mr! Hall's opinion, an act by
congress authorizing the govern
ment to proceed with the wprk of
constructing a system of locks and
canal on the east side of the river.
Every citizen of the Valley
should unite in urging the present
session of congress to pass such ' an

Stock shippers from here today
were notified by the " Railroad
Company of an advance in freight
rates. The increase is from $25 to
$42 a car.
.This raise will not only effect
shippers direct, but, if, maintained,
will effect stock raising in Polk
county. The production of hogs
has been on the increase in this
county the past few years and tak
ing the county as a whole the
quality of the breed is not excelled
in the state. The new freight rates
which will amount to several cents
on the hundred pounds means tha t
much less to the producer for ship
ping by rail is the only practical
way of getting hogs to Portland
With sheep it is different and the
increased rates probably will not
effect the raising of sheep as un
favorably as it does hogs. Sheep
can be driven. In fact stockmen
have been driving sheep in large
droves out of Benton and Polk
counties the past few months. The
Brown Bros, drove a band of 1140
and John Redd another band of
about the same number to Portland.
Tbe railroad stock pens here are
getting in a bad condition since the
The 1904 Hop Yield
The latest estimate on the Ore
gon hop crop tor tnie year is
85,000 bales. While this year's
croD falls short of the 1903 pro
duction, the revenue derived from
it exceeds that of 1903 by more
than $1,000,000. The price re
ceived last year did not go aboye
15 cents while this year the bulk
of the crop sold for prices ranging
from 25 to 30 cents.
Oregon produces more than one-
third of the entire hop yield of the
United States. Putting the aver
age price received for this year'B
crop at 25 cents the income will be
close to $4,000,000.
