Though Oregon was conceded to
Roosevelt the vote was a surprise
to both republicans and democrats.
The maxium estimate was 30,000
but he is over 40,000 in the lead.
Exceeded All l'vpictatioti.
The rote for Roosevelt Tussday
exceeded all expectations. Earljr
in the evening Judge Parker, the
dotnocratio candidate wired bis
opponent:
'"The people by their votes, have
emphatically approved your ad-
miniHtration, and I congratulate
you". '
Roosevelt not only carried all
states that bud been listed as
doubtful, but broke into the "Solid
South" and carried Missouri,
along with Folk, democratic can
didate for govenor.
The plurality for the republic-
ian candidate will be in the neigh
borhood of 1,800,000. The near
est approach to thie was in 1896
When jrcKinleyTeceived a plural
ity of 850,000. Grants was the
next higest plurality 762,991, re
ceived in 1872.

OIL PROSPECTS
Oil Is Discovered in Well Being
Deepened on Monmouth
College Campus
Would Add Several Hundred Feet
To Polk's Streaming:
Blue. Ribbon.
An oil excitement has threaten
ed in this vicinity the past few days.
The Sloper Bros, in lowering the
well at the State Normal college
observed oil floating on the water
Tuesday. The presence of gas had
been noted before. Paper or any
hard substance saturated with the
oily substance, it was found burn
ed readily. The faculty of the
school and neighbors naturally be
came interested and sample bottles
were sent to Eugene and Corvalli3
for chemical analysis. ., ..
It is possible some joker poured
oil in the drill pipes, then again, i
is not at all improbable that by
boring deep enough oil would be
struck in that vicinity. The col
lege well is only two miles south
east of the well sunk by theHirsch
berg company on the Whiteatker
place. The prospect there are
promising enough that the com
pany has orderedN new machinery
and will soon be sinking another
well. ,
The rpport of the chemists on the
samples of oil forwarded is awaited
with interest. Oil experts agree '
that the indications for oil in the
vicinity of Monmouth are good.
When oil is struck a few hundred
more feet will have to be added to
Polk's blue ribbon.
