Two Years I m prison niet.
A New York City cat, after
nearly two years' imprisonment be
tween brick walls four stories high,
and only a little mare than three
inches apart, has been rescued
by means of a lariet. The feline
dropped into the crevice when it
was only a tew weeks old and has
been there erer since, fed and cared
for by families residing in the
buildings.
The prison which it occupied for
so long is between two buildings no
East Fourth street The crevice is
closed front and back and even
closed partly on the top by tin
roofing, Efforts which the kitten
made again and again during the
early days of its imprisonment to
climb up the slippery walls only to
fall back were watched with sym
pathy by the neighbors, and they
became divided into factions
those who thought that the kitten
ought to be killed and relieved of
"Dirty as a hog" is a common
expression yet the hog is maligned
in it. The hog is much cleaner
than some other of our farm ani
mals in many respect. He will
not willingly sleep in his own filth
When he does so it is when he but
been placed in confined quarters
where he can exercise no choice
the matter. Every person that h
had the handling of swine know
how carefully the hog will carry
the straw in one part of bis peu
for his bed and will keep it clean
as Ions as it is possible to do so.
Some swine raisers follow the prao
tie of having a raised platform in
one part of the pen, and on this
the straw for the bed of the hog ii
placed. The hog will always de
posit the exorement In the unbod
ded pnrtiou of the pen, and will
keep bis platform and bed clean.
This cannot be said of the cow or
horse. The hog is accustomed to
root in the ground, for that is
where be gets a large part of his
feed when in his wild state. But
this is not an uncleanly habit. He
wallows in the mud when he takes
his bath, but that is because he is a
thick-skinned animal, and the ordi
nary ablution is insufficient for his
needs, Farmers' Review.
