An improvement to bo noted in
Monmouth this week is the erection
of a fire bell tower and the hanging
of a bell. The hell has been placed
near the ruilroad tmck in easy
hearing of all parts of town and
everybody is expected to respond to
its ringing to see the fire and lend
assistance if necessary.
J. B. Stump shipped three of his
blooded sheep from this station,
this week. A yearling Cotswold
weighing 300 pounds was shipped
to J. O. Thomas of Walla Walla.
A Lincolnshire lamb weighing 100
pounds was shipped to C. C
Laughlin of North Yamhill and a
105-pounder to II. E. Weeden.

depot here is closed, which will be

Warm Weather.
Yesterday was one of the warm
est days Independence has exper
ienced. Sol Edelman, the water
wagon driver, was prostrated from
oyerhe&t, an unusual occurrence
here. A man named Ward, -who
works for E. M. Young, was pros
trated the day before. He is very
sirk yet. Edelman was found ly
ing in his wagon in a helpless con
dition and has not vet recovered.
In registering the temperature the
thermometers differed widely, vary
ing from 92 to 100 degrees. One
in the Kirkland drug store, which
is shaded during the day showed
95 i 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Clements, of the post office
department, having charge of the
Northwest rural delivery routes
was in the city.
