sunk on the Ben Whiteaker farm
between Dallas and Monmouth.

about an abundance of oil under

notably in Tulare and adjoining
counties, where oil has been ex
tracted by the hundreds of car

with the machinery. Suddenly

going at full speed. The bow
struck a log projecting out of the
water and the boat turned turtle.
The occupants were thrown ten
feet away and the bout sauk from
the weight of the engine. The
screams of Price brought Smith
and Garber who were etill within
hearing. A broken oar prevented
their reaching their friends sooner.

the aid of Smith and Garber saved
Mrs. Smith but Hill sank and was
drowned.

Wade and creamery building,
making, with the new building, one
large hhck and will add greatly to
the appearance of that part of
town.
The ground floor will he leased
for mercantile purposes and the
second floor will be used a ban-
quet hail. The store mom lias
not yet been leased but the It. '
Wade Co. will probably secure It
and mske it an extension to their
present quarters.

PROF. G. A. FORBES has built up athletics at the Oregon State Normal until that
school holds a prominent place in the athletic world. Up to three years ago when
he took charge, the school made no pretensions in that line. In fact nothing was at
tempted. The State Normal now holds the championship in the C. A. L. 0. and amateur
championship for baseball iu the state. In basketball a team of girls has been developed that has
been unable to find a team that could score more than three points against the Normals. The m
