while at work in the mill sustained
an injury to his hip which tempo
rarily disables him for a lew days.

Coverdale, recently from California.
Miss Bertha Osborn who has
been in Pendleton for several
months returned to Independence
Saturday. Miss Osborne has a po
eition for the summer in the tele
phone office.
A special motor irom Indepen
dence and Monmouth Sunday af
ternoon took seventy persons out
to the unveiling of the monument
of the late Chas. McCaleb. This
ceremony took place in the ceme
tery several miles south of Mon
mouth and was conducted by the
Woodmen.
Several weeks ago the trained
dog belonging to J. L. McCandless
mysteriously disappeared and has
not been heard of since. The dog
wai a great favorite of Mr. Mc
Candless' little son, Hud, who takes
the loss in no light manner. The
dog was broken to single harness
and was used by the children as a
beast-of-burden. It is thought that
he was stolen.
This city had a pleat-ant call on
Monday last from "Uncle Sam"
Handsaker of Eugene, who, with
his wife, has been visiting with
their daughter and family. Mrs,
W, L. Bristow of Lewisville. This
aged couple crossed the plains with
ox teams fifty years ago and are
now on their way to take in the
annual meeting of the pioneer and
Indian war veterans of whom Mr.
Hansaker "is one," While in the
city they were the guests of Mrs.
Dorneife, a former neighbor. j

freight agent of the Southern Pa
cific railroad was in town Satur
day. Mr. Lounsbury is one of the
speakers on program for the hop
mens and granger's picnic.
Dallas will have a big celebra
tion on the Fourth. On Saturday
preceding, the pioneers will hold
a meeting in that city and on Sun
day a Fourth of July sermon will
be preached, making practically a
three days celebration.

The eleventh annual meeting of
the Willamette Valley Chautauqua
Association will be held at Glad
stone Park July 12 to 24 inclusive,
this year. .The prospectus, an un

nouncing some drawing cards as
lecturers, singers and literary peo
ple. First on the list are Dr. New
ell Dwight Hillis. successor to Hen
ry Ward Beecher and Lyman Ab
bott, as pastor of Plymouth church,
and Captain Richmond Pearson

The following quotation which
is not without interest at the pres
ent time, appeared in the Lafayette
Courier, now defunct, and was cop
ied in the West Side, since merged
with this Daper. of the date of
August 6, 1891: "There is quite a
fight 'brewing' between Judge R. P
Boise and George II. Burnett, Esq.,
both of Salem,. for the republican
nomination for circuit judge of this
district. Judge B is said to want
the office for another term. Judge
Burnett's Iriend's claim that the
old Judge is too old. It will be an
interesting 'mill.'"

Dr. E. J. Thompson, pastor of
the Presbyterian church, looks hale
and hearty alter a six weeks' visit

on his trip the doctor delivered an
addrtss before one vt the literary
societies of the University of Min
nesota in whi-h school lie was at
one time a professor. He also at
tended the General Aswmbly ol the
Presbyterian church at Buffalo, N.
Y., was banqueted by old school
mates in the city of Boston,
tningled with friends of boyhood
days In Vermont and attended the
St. Louis exposition on the way
home. Dr. Thompson found the
same state of incompleteness at the
Fair, that others have observed but
yet all one could reasonably want
to see. Room and board in the
city outside the grounds are to be
had without extortionate charge
the doctor found, but within the
grounds no one is so neglectful as to
fail to charge for every privilege,
even for driuking water. Oregon
might have made better showing
in the doctor's judgment, by erecl
ing an up-to-date building to com
pare with those of Washington and
California instead of hundred
year old log cabin to represent old
Fort Ciatscp. Dr. Thompson's
welcome home has been most cor
dial.

A Surprise.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Messner
gave a dinner party Thursday for
their guests Mr. and Mrs. Lee
Laughlin of McMinnville and Mrs.
Dr. Kelty of Salem. Thursday was
Mr. Messner's birthday and the
whist club gaye him a surprise
in the evening. The rooms were
beautifully decorated with flowers,
refreshments were served ana a
general good time was bad until
the hour paBi midnight. Present
were: Messrs and Mesdames Joe
Hubbard, L. Damon, J. S. Cooper,
Geo. Kutch, Will Walker, Geo.
Burton, J. E. Kirkland, Lee Laugh
lin, Mr. Geo. Conkey and Mrs. Dr.
Kelty. The first prize was won by
Joe Hubbard and the second priz6
by L. Damon.
Excursion Kates to Yaquina
Bay.
On June 1st the Southern Pacific
Co. will resume sale of excursion
tickets to Newport and Yaquina
gay. Both season, and Saturday-to-Mondav
tickets will be sold.

A "Dry" Sunday.
Independence had the unique
experience last Sabbath of going
dry, and the musical clink of glass
es in front of big mirrors was
hushed. There was no looking at
the stars through the bottom of
the cheering glass but the new
order of things was accepted with
good-natured jest, many taking ad
vantage of the superb weather to
put in a day fishing.
