Morley and family arrived last week from Colorado Springs, Colorado. They are tor the pres ent located at the Oppenheimer place across the river. Chas. Huntley has recently pur chased from J. H. Collins, the old Talmage mill site. Charley says: "Strawberries will be blooming there by another season." The Polk county mohair pool has sold the spring dip at 34 cents a pound, which is about 3 cents above the market -price. The lot consists of 50,000 pounds and was purchased by H. L. Fenton. The Wiedemann Show Company played in Independence three nights of last week to the general satisfaction of a large crowd each night. This company is one of the best of its kind on the road and de serves liberal patronage. The K. of P. lodge, always actiye in some line of progress, this week began improvement of the Mon mouth cemetery. A new fence is being built around the grounds, trees are being pruned up and the appearance generally improved. Miss Ruth Cooper, daughter of D. J. Cooper of The Dalles has been the guest at the home of J. S. Cooper the past week. Miss Cooper was among the American girls that went to the Philippine Islands in 1902 as teachers. She Uught the Filipinos for a term and has also tiught the American Indians. Miss Cooper is also a trained nurse hav ing graduated from the New York Hospital, N. Y. lviley Cooper this week. J. K. Johnson was up from Cor vallis Sunday. T. House was in Corvalli the first of the week. Mrs. Will Whiteaker returned to Portland Sunday. Mrs. X. O. ClodMter is visiting relatives in Portland P. M. Holcomb returned t Kansas Ciy the first of the week. His father living at that place is seriously ill. Mrs. Henry Clodfelter and children of Mill City have been visiting in Independence the past week. They will oon change their place of residence from Mill City to Salem. The Social Whist Club was pleasantly entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Will Walker at their home Friday night. The first prizes were won by Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hub bard, while Mrs. L. Damon and Geo. Wedding cards announce the newly married couple will be at home to friends at 788 Marhall street after May 1. The bride is a daughter of L. W. Robertson and formerly lived in .this city. A pleasant little surprise party was given Olen Whiteaker by his friends Saturday evening. It was the celebration of his 14th birth day. After pitying various games refreshments were served and the children departed about an hour later than their usual bed time.
