Independence is rapidly be
coming a tin bucket town. From
5 to 6 o'clock mornings men
with their tin dinner pails may
be seen going in all directions to
the hop fields, where time is too
valuable to spare to walk home
for dinner.

According to the late federal
grand jury in Portland Ex-Surveyor-General
Meldrum is old
enough in crime to vote. It re
turned an indictment with twenty-one
counts against him.
Governor Chamberlain has
written a letter to Governor

ing against the pardon of Caleb
Powers and ex-Governor Taylor

killing of Governor Goebel. The
reason Oregon's governor as
signs for opposing the proposed
pardon is that in his judgment,
Powers received a fair and im
partial trial at the hands of a

near Independence last summer,
and Peacock would have hanged.
