Chamberhuu is one of the very

ports sent out there were either
40,000 or 70,000 present.
A communication was receiv
ed this week discussing the pro
posed rural delivery route out of
Independence south. It does
not appear for the reason no
name accompanied it. Com
munications for publication
must be signed or at least the
writer must give his or her
name.
The republican convention at
Dallas, Saturday, put out what
is conceded to be a clean ticket.
This is presidential election
year. Oregon is a republican
state; Polk is a republican coun-
ty and this is the time when the
whole ticket should be elected.
Independence is rapidly be
coming a tin bucket town. From
5 to 6 o'clock mornings men
with their tin dinner pails may
be seen going in all directions to
the hop fields, where time is too
valuable to spare to walk home
for dinner.
J. N. Williams, captain of
Company C, Oregon National
Guard at Eugene, is to be court
martialed tor jabbing Private
Wilson oi his company with his
sword. What's a sword for if
not to punish somebody.
According to the late federal
grand jury in Portland Ex-Surveyor-General
Meldrum is old
enough in crime to vote. It re
turned an indictment with twenty-one
counts against him.
Governor Chamberlain has
written a letter to Governor
TWkViam of Kentucky, protest
ing against the pardon of Caleb
Powers and ex-Governor Taylor
fnr alWed conspiracy in the

killing of Governor Goebel. The
reason Oregon's governor as
signs for opposing the proposed
pardon is that in his judgment,
Powers received a fair and im
partial trial at the hands of a
Kentucky iury. The same

reason applied in the case of
Peacock, who shot old man Kerr
near Independence last summer,
and Peacock would have hanged.
The fact is the Governor is
