A complete county ticket was nominated by the republican county convention in session in the circuit court room of the county court bouse here to day. Nine delegates each to the con gressional and slate conventions to be held in Salem and Portland on the 13th and 14th respectively were also named. The Polk County Republican ticket. W . Pero- val and W. T. Hoflman elected temporary chairman and U. a. Grant temporary secretary without opposition, A committee on cre dentials, committee on order of business, and another on resolu tions were appointed, and the tem porary organization adjourned un til 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon. 1 The weather was perfect and notwithstanding the demand of hop yards and farms for labor was urg ent there was a remarkably good attendance of delegates. Out of 136 delegates, 133 were present and the manner of voting the proxies of the absent three precipitated the first discussion on the Uoor. Mr. Leet moved to instruct the com mittee on credentials to confine the voting of proxies to the delegation of the' precinct from which the alteration or amendment. The com mittee on creuenuais recognized as entitled to seats in the convention all present whose names had been certified up by secretaries of the various primary conventions. No recommendation was made as to the three proxies and the conven tion allowed them to be voted by parties outside of the precinct. ASSESSOR. Carl Graves, a popular young man of Jackson precinct was an other who met with no opposition and was nominated by acclamation for the. oflice of aesensor. HCIKiOL SUPERINTENDENT. C. L. Starr, the present incumb ent, and W. J. Crawford of Spring Valley, were placed in nomination for school superintend. The seconds of Mr. Starr's . nomination were so numerous and well distrib uted over the various sections of the county, that Mr. Crawford did the graceful thing by withdrawing and Mr. Starr was nomiuated by acclamation. Syron Salem, April 13 Binger Her mann was re-nominated for con gress by the republican convention here today. No other name was presented. L. T. Harris of Lane was here with his friends te con test for honors with Hermann, but last night it became evident that it would be futile to carry the fight into the convention. Harris was short of votes. When A. C. Masters of Douglas placed in nomination, the Hon. Binger Hermann, A. C. Woodcock of Eugene, law partner of Mr. Harris moved that the secretary be instructed to cast the vote of the convention for Mr. Hermann. In seconding Mr. Woodcock's mo tion, E. Hofer said that last year when Marion county went into the convention with a candidate it's delegates bowed to the wishes of Lane county and took Mr. Her mann; now Lane was asked by Marion to take him again. , Mr. Harris assured the conven tion Lane couity will stand by its nominee. For delegates to tin republican national convention, Dr. J. M. Keene of Medford and J. V. Camp bell of Oregon City were chosen. Walter Tooze of Woodbarn was made chairman of the congressional committee for the ensuing two years. Geo. C. Brownell acted as chair man of the convention. Some of Harris' friends feel that he should have made a fight against Brownell for the chairmanship, but it was the judgment of bis managers that he should not show his hand in op posing the Hermann organization. u hile waiting for the credentials committee's report. Ex-Governors Geer and Lord and B. L. Eddy ad dressed the convention. There was some criticism of Chairman Brownell's manner ot conducting the proceedings "accord ing to program" and Cliff McArthur of Rickreall aroused applause by moving that the nominations and committee reports be made "ac cordingto program." Butler Fridav afternoon, April 8th. The house was prettily decorated with a pro fusion of narcissus, and the ladies were entertained with progressive top spinning which produced abundant merriment. Mrs. R. H. Knox proved herself to be the most skillful spinner and received a prize, while Mrs. D. B. Taylor was awarded the booby prize. Dainty refreshments were served. Mrs. Butler was assisted in entertaining by Mrs. A. Nelson and Mrs. I. W. Dickinson. The reading club con sists of twenty-six members, each of whom contrib utes a book which is passed in routine every two weeks, The clab is entering upon its third year. A committee has been appointed to procure new books for the year's reading. li
