Russel Wvatt is at Burns,
Harney county, trying a murder
case. there is not a county seat
in the United State? so remote
Herman and Harris are lost fVnm n railroad as Burns or
sight of in the strife for state Wyatt would probably be there,
senator. And yet it may be he ran too
soon for he may be nominated
for circuit judge before he has
time to return.
The press of the state, with
out exception, has a good word
for C. II. Markham. recently
transferred by the Ilarriman
railroad system from Texas to
San Francisco. The people of
Oregon appreciate the efforts of
Mr. Markham in their behalf
when he had charge of the
Oregon lines.
It is an impossibility for
strictly honest man to flatter one
whom he dislikes.
No matter who is nominated
for state senator, his success will
not be worth as much as a few
days ot sunshine.
Every citizen of Polk county
has equal right to aspire to the
office of state senator. The lm
pression that the nomination be
longs to aay individual is
wrong.
Vote vonr sentiments at the
nrimnriM nd convention. If
you lose die game and support
the successful man. If you win
be magnanimous toward the
other fellow.
Marion county republicans
have put out a reasonably good
legislative ticket. It would have
been much stronger had George
Bingham and M. L. Jones been
on the list.
The best interests of the state
of Oregon demand that Malcolm
Moody be sent to congress from
the Second district. The ex
igencies of politics demands J.
X.. Williamson. We'll see which
shall prevail.
J. R. Burton, United States
senator from Kansas, has been
found guilty of receiving illegal
fees in his official capacity, and
sentenced to six months in jail
and also to pay $2,500 fine.
This is the first case of the kind
on record.
Salm democrats held a ban
quet at the Willamette hotel in
Salem Monday night. In some
respects it was comparable with
the banquet recently given by
the Polk County Republican
club at Independence, and in
some respects it was not.
