has been here this week adjusting
the Suver warehouse loss.
Henry Clodfelter of Mills City,
arrived in Independence Sunday
to spend a few days with relatives
Henry Wilks, after visiting rela
tives here for several days, went to
Portland Sunday to attend school.
J. E. Hubbard and I L. Smith
were disinterested spectators in
Dallas on the day of the city elec
tion at that place.
Mrs. Carrie Munsell of Portland
was a guest at the home of E. E.
Paddock over Sunday. Mrs. Mun
sell is Mrs. Paddock's cousin.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Morrison and
son visited over Sunday at the
home of Mr. Morrison's sister, Mrs.
H. Martin on the Lucsiamute.
Homer Davenport, the famous
cartoonist is in Oregon and is
billed to lecture in Salem. Albany,
Silverton and a few other places.
Seryices of special interest at the
Presbyterian church next Sabbath
morning and evening. Most ex
cellent music. A very kind wel
come to all.
W. W. Newton and family ar
rived from the East the past week
and will locate in this vicinity.
Mr. Newton is a brother of G. N.
and A. S. ewton.
M Ella chafer returned to her
home south of Independence Mon
day. Miss Shafer haa been in
Portland the past year.
J. S. Cooper went to Portland
Fridav and was taken suddenly ill.
He was unable to leave his room
until Monday morning, when he
took the train for home. Mr.
Cooper was accompanied by his
daughter Miss Pearl.
The Misses Howard of Ileppner,
are here visiting with their cousin,
Mrs. Claud Skinner. The Uoward
family were living in Heppner at
the time of the flood, and five mem
bers of the family, the parents and
three dcughteas were swept away.
The two sisters happened to be vis
iting in the country at that time.
Lee Short, foster son of Mrs. M.
A. Tethrow, died at his home in
Independence Friday. April 1st,
after a lingering illness. Deceased
was 24 years of gn and was a
member of the M. E. church. Fu
neral services were held from the
home, Rev. Edmondson officiating.
The remains were buried in the
Buena Vista cemetery.
Dr. Thompson went to Salem pn
Sabbath afternoon tn preach the
sermon at the Knight Templars'
Easter service. Several hundred
people were in attendance upon
this service and the Sir Knights in
their attractive uniforms made an
imposing and impressive appear
ance. A choir of the finest singers
in Salem gave some choice and
charming selections of music.
The little son of Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Lucas of Rickreell, while en
gaged in j laving with some other
children one day last week, was in
some unfortunate way, struck in
the eye with a stick of wood. He
was taken to Dr. Gillis at Salem,
where it was fonnd he had lost the
sight of the injured member. Grave
fears are alno entertained for sav-

in from his homestead this week.
Daring the summer he will con
duct a bicycle repair shop in Inde
pendence. The Presbytery of Willamette
will meet in Albany college next
Tuesday evening, the 12lh. Mr.
William Riddle and Dr. Thomp
son are delegates from the Pres
byterian church of this city.
Oregon has made a wonderful
growth in the past 53 years. In
1851, the population of Oregon
was 13,323 all told. Her total vote
on June 2, of the same year was
only 2,337. The popular vote in
November 1900 was 80,000. There
will be over 100,000 yotes polled in
(Dragon next November.

dictment in relation to land
frauds. Cunningham, the sheep
king of Umatilla county, and who
nave testimony upon which other
were indicted by a previous grand
jury, was one of those indicted
thid time. Emma Watson has
been arrested for alleged implica
tion in land swindled in thi state.
