The minstrel show on Saturday

Carl Barbour and J. Griffin who
have been visiting at the home of
J. K. Morrison, left today for their
home in Michigan. While here
Messrs Barbour and Griffin proved
up on timber claims and tbey may
be expected to return to Oregon

Walter Nichols, deputy county
clerk will leaye on the 15th for
the Philippines where he goes
under civil service regulations to
teach school. His departure will
leave a vacancy in the clerk's office
which United States Loughary will
have to fill by appointment. It is
understood Johnnie VanOrsdell
can haye the place if he wants it
but Johnnie is a surveyor and has
his eye on surveyorship for Polk
county and he is not likely to ac
cept an appointment as deputy.
The Social Whist Clnb.
The weather with its torrents of
rain did not prevent the weekly
meeting of the Social NVhist cluo
last week. The members were en
tertained at the elegant home of
Mrs. W. A. Messner and there was
a good attendance. The first prize
was won by Dr. and Mrs. O. D.
Butler, while Mr. Damon and Mrs.
WU1 Walker captured the booby.
Refreshments were served at the
close of the game. Mrs. Geo.
Conkey will entertain the club this

Rebekahs Entertain.
The Indepedence Rebekah Lodge
gave an At Home to the Dallas
lodee Tuesday night. About 45
members came over by a special
motor. Two candidates, Mrs. R.J
TuTlor and Miss Inez Warner,
were initiated into the mysteries of
the order, after which several very
intereatinz speeches were mad.
As address of welcome by Mrs,
V.tta. Walker Noble Grand was
followed by several pleasing re
snonses. Miss fehelton, nooie
Grand, of the Dallas lodee. in her
address in behalf of the visitors,
commended the lodge and its work
in the highest terms. Miss Bertha
Bohannon played a march while
those present repaired to the dining
ball where a banquet was spread.
