The city primaries were held at the citv hall Saturday evening, and tha following ticket win put in the flulil by acclamation: Mayor, J.H. Coopor; Recorder, W, Q. Hharman; Martliul, A. J. Tuppar; Council man, Chan. Mattison, W. A. Mm iter and P. H. Taylor. The, election promised to be a quiet one but at ttio last moment Dr. K. L. Ketchum's name was proposed for the mayoralty contest. There waa no regular ticket in op portion, but contrary to the desire of Dr. Ketcbum, friends insisted in tixing hia name for that position. This wa the only office a real con test was waged, although many i'itizaue received complimentary vote for yariotis offices. J. K. Cooper wai elected mayor by a ma jority of 2H, the vote standiug 55 for Ketcbum, 83 for Cooper. J. B Cooper, the new mayor, ia eo well known that remark are hardly necessary. He baa been a resident ofthlerily many years, and wai president of the First National Bank. He haa considerable pro rty interests here, and should tuakt a representative mayor. The funeral of Iitaao Vattieon, who died at hia residence near this city, December 4th, aged 81 yeara, I month and 10 days, occurred at the Presbyterian church, ot which lie has been a faithful member for 14 years, last Sabbath morning at, II o'clock. The aervicea were con ducted by the pastor, Rev. E. J. Thompson. I). P., and were very imprensive. The church waa filled to its utmost capacity and many were not able to be seated or eyen gain admieeion. Mr. Mattison was yery highly esteemed by his fellow citizens as a kind ana honorable man, a true friend, and a genial, happy, consistent Christian. He possessed each sterling qualities of character, and so exemplified them in his life that all were attracted by hie friendly manner, and by ov cry one, "Grandpa" MattiBou was called a good man. It ia well known that even in his blindness of the past few years, ho retained the same cheerful disposition that always characterised him. He hae left an inCrm and feeblo wife, his companion for almost three score years, and for whom he has most tenderly and faithfully cared and provided in her suffering and help liwsneeH, with the live sona and their families, bitterly bereaved. The following statement was dic tated by him a short timo before his death and at Ida request given to his pastor to be read at his fu neral: "Isaac Mattison waa born in Oswego. N. V., October 24th, 1822. At the age of 23 he went to Canada, whero he was married to Lavina Parker May 0. 1847. They moved to New York and in 18(55 went to Michigan where they resid ed 17 years. In 1882 they came to Oregon, whero they have since re elded in and around Independence. This union was blessed with eight childron, three of whom have gone before to be with Jesus, and the rest with wito mouru his losa.
