big bonfire burned and a genuine
font-ball rally was held by the
Normal students and members of
the Salem High school team to
offset the "unevenness" of the
game played Friday afternoon by
the Hieh school boys and JNornial
team, which resulted in a score ot
92 to 0 in favor of the Normals.

the company and as two long files
of boys and girls marched down
from the Normal grounds shouting,

The celebration of Halloween
seemed more like what it Bhould be
simply a time for innocent fun and
merrymaking. At a seasonable
hour this well conducted company
diHpereed and we old folks laid our
night-capped head on our pillow,
thankful that "boys can be boys,"
without being hoodlums.

smouldering ashes was all that re

How the fire caught will, of course,

not been learned by the writer.

real mean man, no one pauses to
express sympathy and often the re
mark is heard, "It serves him
right." On the other hand, if a
man is honest, industrious and
does hia humble best, in the world,
a calamity that befalls him is con
sidered a neighborhood affair and
words of sympathy are freely
spoken.

The foot-ball game last Saturday
on the State Normal grounds, be-
the, Normal eleven and the
Salem High School, eleven was
rather a one-sided affair. The
High School lads were out classed
from the start, but still they play
ed a plucky game just the same.
Young Bean was the star piayer

went out of the game in the last
half, the Normal team had no op
position. The Normal boys showed good
head work and strong interference.
Hoisington, who played full-back
clearly demonstrated his ability as
a ground gainer, as did also Murphy
and De Witt Lewis at end in the
second half could not get warmed
up as there was no work to do.
' Stumpt Rutherford, f.ailey and
Sturgill, each showed up well, as
did. all, - ttiW uen--:. With a; jit tie
more speed behind the line and no
fumbles, the No'mal boys will
play good ball. Coach Burnett
has shown fine judgement in his
work with the men. The Normal
boys are a nice lot of fellows each
man a gentleman. .
Next Saturday they are to meet
Albany on the Normal grounds,
and as the Albany' team is con
sidered nae of the best in the State,
the crowd will not see Saturdays
game repeated. The Normal boys
intend to show Albany that they
are up against the real thing. Turn
out and Bhow your loyalty.
Miss Mabel Cooper, who is
teaching school near North Yam
hill, spent Sunday with her parents
here. She is delighted with her
school room duties.
