Attractive Women.
All women aenaibly deire to le

New Underwood.
Last Thursday's Oreponian
told of the conviction of one
Paul Underwood at Scuttle for
the crime of murder in the sec
ond degree. It appears that he
and his young wife had drowned
their new-born babe some time
before and he had led the otli
eers a Tracy chase of two weeks
before he was captured. The
law fixes the penalty at from 10
to 20 years imprisonment.
This reci. 11 to our mind a
picture. Perhaps 18 or 20 year

of ago were playing childhood
games together in a little vil
luge cut out of the northern for

those days were few in that vil

together. W hile lflt two were

having grown to manhood and

this paper and the other is Paul
I'nderwood, who was one of the

Such events as this must
needs awaken solemn thoughts
in a mini's mind. To connect
the free hearted child who once
shared with us the old games,
who played war and sailed on
rafts in the old river with us
when both bad seen scarce six
years, with the stolid man who
Heard the verdict of murder
against bis name without flinch-:
ing is well nigh impossible.
But such is one of the changes
life has wrought. Such an
event leaves a feeling of sadness
which is not to be resisted.
Under such circumstances meu
would like to disconnect the
present criminal with the old
memory, whose pleasure is thus
destroyed, but they cannot. It
is one of the tragedies of life.
