midst than the telephone
message received early Monday
morning that a successful out
break of convicts had occurred
in Salem and that three brave
guards had met death and an
equally brave '''lifer" hud al
most given his life in the effort
to protect a guard.

to the scene where the murderers
had been seen.
When the convicts appeared

each holding a rifle ready for
action.

lowed the tracks of their quarry.
