It was a warm, pleasant day April 21, 1900 when Miss Aurilla Sullivan, of this city, paid her debt to nature and passed to pathetic dust as was generally supposed. But she turned to stone beautiful white marble says the Baker City Herald. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Sullivan, well and favorably known in this com munity. She was buried in the Masonic portion of Mount Hope cemetery, and the funeral ceremonies took place at the Methodist church at 2 P. M. on the 2Hrd day of April. 1!()0. Miss Sullivan was exactly 23 years of age at the time of her death. On account of the misunder standing of a somewhat peculiar private nature she was disinterred for removal to the Union cemetery on the 23rd of May, 1901, having been jut 13 months beneath Mother Earth. The grass had scarcely grown green over the mound that sheltered her. The girl's father was one of the three gentlemen who attended the reinterment, and to their utter surprise, when the glass on the casket was removed, the corpse proved to have been petrified and turned into pure white marble. Three men were required to lift the CHsket, and in life Miss Sulli van never exceeded in weight over 1.J0 pounds. There was no odor whatever connects! with the re mains, nut me velvet inside ol the casket was visibly stained, while the silver handles and inscription plate were untarnished. First pub. Aug 2U.
