The republicans and democrats
have put lairly good tickets in the
field fo.r municipal officers, and the
people of our city can hardly make
a mistake in selecting their candi
dates. The candidates for mayor
are both representative men and
each Jjave a strong personal follow
iug. fi is probable that neither
party could have made a moreju
dicious selection. The candidates
for marshal are both strong and
competent men, and the same can
be said. of the candidates for city
treasurer. The republican can
didate for recorder is a well known
business man and competent in
every way, and his apponent is also
well known in this community
The respective candidates for coun
cilmen are all representative citi
zens. honest and competent. The
city's, interests are perfecly safe in
the hands of the next council.
In these times of low prices, im
overished trade and labor begging
for the crumbs that fall from Di
ves' table, it may sound somewhat
ironical to hear an ex-minister to
Russia extolling the great wealth
of this country before the Jiew
Yori chamber of commerce, but it
is the kind of talk that makes us
all feel proud we are Amerioans
In two decades, from 1870 to
1890," said Ex-Minister Charles
Emory Smith, "the three powers
of Great Britain, France and Ger
manv, all combined, with their
125,000,000 of people, gained in
wealth $30,000,000, while the Unit
ed Slates alone, with its 60,000,000
of people, gained $338,000,000. The
United States earns two-thirds as
much as the other three put to
gether. Their debts are piling up;
ours are melting away, Their tax
es are rising; ours are falling. Their
roductive forces are stripped for
arms and armaments; ours at the
plow, the forge, the loom and the
exchange. England's taxes are 10
percentofher earnings; France's 18
per cent; Germany's lOj per cent;
hile ours are only 5 per cent. We
are only at the threshold of our de
