In taltiiitf issue wjib ur teemed cou temporary we do W mean '': to be captious, for we cortaluly thhik that hi contention, in certain uartic ulart , U utterly untenable. We see. no reason why a newspaper man should not eugag in the business "in fields already fully covered" any more than a . merchant should not, or a lawyer or a , physician. The tiwr ts not an object of cliarity. It ia not "a us on jople iu the way w( support" any uiore than is the dry goods store, the phy slcian or the lawyer. They supply a demand, and the one that cau most ; aatisfsctorily fill that demand survives. Under the competitive steui, which is the laud, of all organized and complex ociety, each individual has the privilege of eomnetiiiff with his fellows in the '.atruggl for supremacy. Indeed, all or jjanic life follows the same law in the Sana itruzirle for existence, Sentimon- ' fiti may deplore the fai t that nature ,and huuiau society are to mercilessly iuat that only the fittest survive, but the law is inexorable and sensible pcop.e don't coinpltiin because the universe is , not constructed according to their plan. They tak the world as they find it and trade ia to win, acking only the favors warded to merit and conquered by in dustry, It appear to us that our con temporary takes a narrow view and appeals to selfish motive when he eomplaini tliat "the new concerns" , (meaning th new papers) "prevent the prosperity of tlios already established." We shall next expect to hear our Tn treble oon temporary advocating the idea j of granting exclusive franchise privileges to a few of the older established news papers, forgetting that the only patent right to, existence any business or con cent can have is that it hills a want, , (applies a demand and succeeds because it possesses merit place, could siuwmhI In overriding the unwritten law of American politics which proclaims against a third term president ISuch an innovation would be dangerous to the liberties of the people and inimical to the spirit of oar political institutions.
