Mr. McBride was recognized as a pos
sible senatorial darkborse by a few w ho

legislative confidence, but his election
came like a thunderbolt from a clear sky
to the majority of the. people of Oregon.
The new senator-elect is a native son of
Oregon, and comes of sturdy pioneer
stock.' He baa served the people for
eight years as secretary of etate, and
also Berved one or two terms in the
legislature with credit to himself and
good satisfaction to his constituents.
He is a man of the people and is per
sonally quite popular. He bears a
clean political record and an untarn
ished personal character. He has the
reputation of standing outside of
machine politics, beeides his early
training was in line with the wants and
wishes of the Common people. Mr.
McBride has fair ability ami will no
doubt make a conscientious and in
dustrious member of the senate. He
ranks equally with Hermann, w hich is
no small praise, and he will always
stand out boldly for what he believes to
be the best interests of Oregon.
It is becoming inorj and more impor
tant as the country booomes populated
and business increases that go-l roads
should be established. Good roads are
as essential for the farming community
as they are for the- accomodation of the
business of the city. Them is no coun
try in the world in greater need of a sub
stantia! road system than the Willam
ette valley. Our lone rainy season
make good roadbeds a neeessitv.
There is no reason why l'olk county
could not have splendid roads the year
around if letter methods were only
adopted in road working. The supply of
gravel is abundant at almost any jxiint
in the count y.and a few years of judicious
put our roads in first-class condition.
The innovation should bein with this
season's work.
Tits panicky effect of the redemption
of silver certificates in gold is shown in
the enormous amount of Treasury notes
redeemed since hS'JO. The treasury sta
tistics show that $2)4,000,000 in gold
has been paid out under the Silver-Purchase
act of 1SO0. The law gives the
option of payment in either gold or sil
ver to the treasurer, but under a vicious
precedent the option is given to the
holder of the certificates. It is claimed
this was necessary to keep up the parity
liotween the two metals. With such a
precedent once established it is diflicult
and perhaps hazardous to make a
