York was practically icebound.
The bay from the Narrows to San
dy Hook, is almost a solid field of
ice. lhe upper bay would be as
bad were it not Inat a number of
tugs are at work breaking the ice
to permit the passage of crafts and
that small steamers are plying in
the North and East riyers. The
canal and many of the railroads
are so badlv blocked bv irn and

for several days.

an almost superhuman effort, the
taxpayers have been granted per
mission to put two experts into the
county clerk's office to examine
the books. C. II. Stuller and I. S.
Hinshaw are the experts and will

First Contract of lta Kind.
Tacoma, Wash., Feh. 10. Gen
eral Harris and Charles W. Clark,
of Helena, Mont., today closed a
contract for the shipment of a
large amount of gold ore from
a Montana mine, owned by them,
to the Tacoma smelter. The con
tract contains a provision that, if
gold goes to a premium, the smel
ter's settlements with them shall
be made on that basis. It is said
to bo the first contract of the kind
so made.
Cold Weather in Europe.
London, Feb. 10. Dispatches
from several parts of the conti
nent say that weather of great
severity prevails. Toe Seine from
beyond Paris to its source is frozen
over, in some parts ot Kenish
Prussia and Thurina the mercury
went to 22 below zero. Eight more
deaths from the cojd are reported
from various parts of Germany.
The cold continues unabated in
England. Several rivers are frozen
over, including the upper reaches
of the Thames, where vehicles and
pedestrir.ns are crossing on the ice.

London, Feb. 12. The Majestic,
which sails from Liverpool to
morrow, will take $1,290,000 irj
gold for the United States. Satur
day $3,710,000 in gold will be
shipped from here.
