Of course it i3 unfortunate for the

Saunders was serving a life s.'nt-'-eo for

io tho loss wiil reach into millions of
dollars, and that it will take the country
several years to recover fro:n tlu dam

Oregon are fortunate in being free from
any climatic disasters to tiieir crops.and
while our winters may be rather moist
at times, th3 terrific cyclone and tli'J
blighting blizzard never visits this
favored region. Our people have much
to hi thankful for in the way of a mild
and equable cti.n.it:. A tin Orego
nian says, "Oregm ir.-vcr has claimed,
never will claim the aathorsaip of
'Beautiful Snow.' "
Wk learn from tho Oregonian that
one of the Vanderbilts has imported a
voracious species of the East India
weasel into this country for the purpose
of destroying roJents and other vermin
that infest his Xorth Carolina farm.
This vivacious and prolific niongoosa is
said to propagite its kind three times a
year, and each time the accommodating
spouse yields a litter of twelve. This
voracious weasel devours all kinds of
birds, domestic fowls, and when pressed
by hunger will fscdon young vegetables.
It has become a terrible pest in Jamacin
where it was first introduced to destioy
field mice and rats. The Oregonian
very sensibly suggest.'! that "a shotgun
quarantine should be instituted around j
the Vanderbilt estate in Xorth Caro
Una."
It is quite amusing to see that bril
liant independent organ, the Portland
Daily Sun, repeatedly quoting the Polk
County Itemize as a republican sheet.
Is it possible our esteemed contemporary
down at the metropolis has a purpose in
so doing, or is it unable to recngnize
birds of its own feather? And there is
another explanation that occurs to our
mind. Probably Brother Wash strains
the gray matter of bis brain so bard to
sustain an independent attitude in poli
tics that lie is unconsciously warped to
the opposite side of his well known per
sonal convictions . This peculiar trait
of the mind is one of the inexplicable
puzzles of psychology. -
Euotiieu V.'asii, of the Iteinizer, very
sauvely remarks: "Maybe the teach
ers' institute acted wisely and niayhe
they did not in making the Extkici'uise

This week's issue of tho Extek-

showing in its advertising columns,
considering that this is our first
issue after the holidays, when
business is usually dull. Out of
some seventy-two professional and
business representatives in this
city, we have sixty-four represent

either in locals or display ads.
And had wc time to have seen the
others we probably could have
secured their advertisement.
We
shall call on them in the near
future and see what can be done
