Keeney motored to Salem Saturday to witness the game between McMinnville and Wil lamette. Moss Walker, accompanied by his brother, W. S. Walker of Albany, D. E. Halladay, president of the P. T. A. of this city left Wednes day to attend the State convention of that organization, held at Eugene this week. Mrs.cIIalladay goes as a delegate representing the Independ ence association. The Ladies' auxiliary of the Bap tist church will hold a cooked food sale at Conkey & Walker grocery next Saturday, October 28. Hot doughnuts and coffee wiH be served. Come out and patronize the ladies and help a good cause, C. S. Staats of Portland has been spending a few days at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. E. Hubbard. Stricken with paralysis about 18 "Mel" Baldwin returned to Yakima yesterday after spending about a week in Independence visiting his mother and aunt and attending to bustoesi matters., Mr. Baldwin is the proprietor of a successful hotel at Yakima and is much taken with that country, Mr. Baldwin says that liuineMs Is good, although there has been much inconvenience and not a little loss on account of the lack of sufficient cars to handle the enormous fruit crop of the Yakima country. Mrs. Donna Pomeroy, nee Lois Hewitt, formerly of Independence, is seriously ill at the home of her parents, Dr. and Mrs. L L. Hewitt of Lauralhurst. On Sunday last Mr. and Mrs. Dole Pomeroy. Mrs. Grover Mattison and Mrs. Hugh Hanna motored to Portland to see Mrs. Pom eroy. E. L. Eddy has taken a position as bookkeeper with the Stewart Motor company. His home was formerly in Minneapolis. Accompanied by his wife he drove through to the coast, arriving in Portland a short time ago. Mr. and Mrs. Eddy are temporarily stopping at the residence of Mrs. Ferguson. Lester Guthrie has purchased S. Muhleman's wood sawing outfit and will continue to do custom work. Mr. MuMcman is getting things in shape for his departure for California. Ac companied by Mrs. Muhleman he expects to leave the first of the coming week in a new Ford truck upon which he has built a compact but convenient abiding place. On Sunday evening last the Meth odist pulpit was filled by Dr. Edwards of Salrm. Dr. Edwards was for years the pastor at Ashland and is at present working in the interests of -the Willamette university and of an endowment fund for superannuated clergymen. B. F. Nye returned Sunday from the Ncstuck with a car loaded with Silversides. He was accompanied by his son, Vernon Nye, and a brother, R. P. Nye of Jefferson. They landed 24 big ones. Karl Chapman left for his home at Reedspo.rt, Oregon, last Friday after spending several days with his father, W. N. Chapman. Mrs. Thomp son is a sister of Moss Wa ker of i Hotel Beaver. G. C. Skinner and Chief of Police F. P. Parker are in the mountains for a week's hunt. They were taken to Gates Monday afternoon by Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Groves and from there they will find their way back into the timber for some distance with the expectation of becoming acquainted with the elusive deer. Several members of the Woman's Foreign Missionary society motored to Albany Friday to attend a district convention of that organization. The ladies returned to Independence Saturday evening. Those attending were: Miss Childs, Mrs. Green, Mrs. McDevitt and Mrs. Campbell. Misses Opal Hewett and Ulla Dick inson were home from 0. A. C. for the weekend. On Sunday afternoon two auto loads of relatives and friends accompanied the young ladies to Corvallis, returning the same even ing.
