A progressive Siamese leper "vll
lagu" is described by the Bungok cor
respondent of the London Dally Mall.
Wonderful progress has been made
during recent times with regard to
the treatment of lepers In this neigh
borhood, many scores having been
housed at the Chlengmal leper asylum,
which was estahllslied with the Joint
aid of the Siamese government and
the mission to lepers some thirteen
years ago.
This usylum Is run on the lines of
a Siamese village, with a village head
in nn rhosfn by the lepers themselves.
The leper has beea made to think that
he is still a useful cltlxeu of the state,
and not a social outcast as hereto
fore. They work under their bead
man, look after the roads, and attend
to the clearing of the Jungles.
There are two schools within the
settlement for children of the lepers
tind the attendance Is good, despite
the fact that most of the pupils sur
fer from the terrible disease. The
plague-stricken boys and girls, with
their nerveless, deformed flngws, work
as hard as thetr more fortunate leprosy-free
schoolmutes In the other
school of the asylum.
The asvlum has Its own currency,
so that the coins can be avoided by
the outside world.
