Was it murder or only a couple
of moonshiners recovering their hid
den cache of booze?
That is the question that is agi
tating the minds of the people of
the Elkins community and led to
Deputy Sheriff T. B. Hooker being
summoned there last Thursday
investigate a peculiar circumstance.
Late m the afternoon of Monday
May 9th, two men in a large automo.
bile stopped at the farm home of
Ralph Dodson and inquired of Mrs.
Dodson, who was in the yard, how
far it was to the next place, that of
of Clarence Tedrow. She replied that
it was quite a distance, but that the
road was bad and they had better
leave their car there and walk the
rest of the distance. To this sugges
tion the men replied that they would
drive as far as they could, as they
had a heavy package to cary from
Mr. Tedrow's to the "car.
Mrs. Dodson mentioned the matter
to her husband, but they thought lit
of fat. and has gradually increased
until during April she produced o
nounds of fat. She was as happy as
a lark, and in excellent condition, and
there was no reason why she would

west The Oregon Growers' Coopera

trade has been partial to the Califor

have started the Petitea in this terri

PRUNE LOSS IS HEAVY

And 81 Income Return
CHE TWO CHIEF RECOMMENDATIONS of the
8 Gold Notes of Mountain States Power Company
are their stability and the regularity of income re
turn to the investor.
During the past yealr the investors in these Notes have
witnessed evidence on every hand proving their wisdom
in placing their money in an industry inherently stable.
Their interest has been paid the same as usual. The com
pany has had no high-priced inventories to liquidate and
its business continues to grow steadily.
Our Gold Notes represent investment safety, based
upon a business engaged in supplying necessities in grow
ing demand, the market for which does not fluctuate,
because the law of average applies to every community
and territory.
Compare this investment with others with which you
may be familiar.
The prune loss throughout Polk
county will, it U estimated, total
from 25 to 75 percent. There are lo
cations that do not seem to have suf
fered to any great extent, but in many
other districts there are not enough
prunes left to count. There will be
many idle dryers as a conaeqeunce,
a number of grower having cancelled
their orders for dryer wood.
At first it was thought that it was
only the older orchards that had suf
fered, but close inspection has whown
that in many of tho young orchards
the amount of the fruit on the trees is
so small that it will hardly pay to
shake and pick. This includes some
