business men was held at Dallas. It was characterized

the cab during its local service, again
was in the post of authority on the

Rtrnhorn line, a couple of months
hence, and will probably do so.

the Airlie telephone exchange situa
tion. It is still functioning and will
continue to Jo so unil June 1st. At
that time there will be a change of
some kind, declares the present owner.
TndpDendence business men are in
terested in having this exchange main-
tained. It is the connecting link tor
about, a dozen rural lines and if the
exchange is closed there will be much
inconvenienceThe Creditmens Asso
ciation has taken hold of the matter
and is attempting to devise some
means whereby Independence may con
tinue to have direct phone connection
with the Airlie country.
This matter is being handled by a
committee consisting of A. C. Moore,
M. C. Williams, H. Hirschberg, C. W.
Irvine and C. D. Calbreath.
FALLS CITY HERO GETS
DISTINGUISHED CROSS
Alvin Lester Bowrman, a son of Mrs.
Ida C. Bowman of Falls City, has been
Md corn in 5 and 10 pound packages 'awarded the distinguished service
to be distributed among the corn clu cross. It has been forwarded from
members of the industrial club of Washington to the navy recruiting
which there are about fifty earnest j station in Portland ior aenvery w
workers. H. Hirschberg, of Inde-lthe young man. .Bowman is an ex-
pendence, presented the corn to the pharmacist's mate, third class, y. .
club members through the County Su- N., and the cross is awarded him by
nerintendent's office, Mr. Hirschberg the commanding general of the Am-

years and always furnishes the best
seed procurable. The seed being dis
tributed this year in valued at 25
cents per pound. Mr. Wills says the
prospects among the club merbers are
very favorable for the coming season.
Particularly are the children near
Grand Rondo showing keen interest.
The annual Grand Ronde fair is the
incentive for the keen competition.
Most of the members are endeavoring
to plant and care for half acre tracts.
