THE STARVATION OF OTHEli
PEOPLES HAS NOT BOTH
ERED US MUCH. j
While we are fussing because fresh j
eggs are hard to get and because the
government bacon ig too fat and be
cause other crumpled rose le'ives dis
turb our soft slumbers, oiv oriental
brethern are facing a real fond pro
blem. To this time the starvation of oth
er peoples has not really bothered us
Rut now we are beginning to rea
lize that we cannot be left undisturb
ed in a land of plenty if hunlrels of
Trillions of our neighbors lack food.
Oceans are no longer barriers and
Asiatics no longer starve hoplessly
49(1 meekly.
fo this oriental food crisis should
tStorest us.
The fact is that there are more
Svv mouths each year in the orient
&nn there is new food supply.
Rice is the reliance, for millions
the sole support. And about all the
rice land is today under culivation,
and it is not producing enough food
for the present population.
Asia, in the mass, cannot import
food, ten cents a day laborers cannot
buy foodstuffs produced by four dol
lar a day laborers, on $200 an acre
land.
Asia has almost developed to the
limit its natural food resources and
its population is increasing faster
than ever.
To this time nature has kept ba
lance over there. Pes lence and war
and famine have Yiped out the sur
plus population.
The western world has brought san
itation, decency, peace to Asia, to the
teeming orient, and has upset the
world.
The Americas remain the last un
developed food areas of the world,
xcepting the somewhat resticted
7ones in Africa. And the hunger and
the numbers of the orient increase
ve may expect our problems of immi
gration and foreign diplomacy to in
cease. Certainly the collies rice may be
come one of ou national perils.
