and they are placed over the hills until the young plants
are well up. They protect the plants in the event of ad
verse temperatures. When it is safe to remove the caps,

loupe expert knows every kink of his business. He turns
the caps back so that they protect the plants on the north
side, while the soutnern exposure is sun presei veu.
Among he Imperial Valley growers there is intense
competition to get the edible "cants" on the big Eastern

mehods as here described are used. They are a product
of competition.
Not all the cantaloupes grown are capped, on east and
west rows, but a large percentage are in 1919, accord
ing to a good authority, 8000 out of 13,000 acres.
