place on the Charles River. There
were boat races, awlmmlng races, sail

several events and stand high In the

It seemed as If all of Boston lined the
green bunks of the beautiful Charles
River basin to see the sports. There
were submarine hnsers flying about
at 30 knots, many s-'i boats, motor
boats, canoei and in fiic-t. all sorts of
water crafts. I will try and get a

I expect to be with the fleet within
fifteen more days and sailing the
mighty Atlantic. I've been a dry-
land sailor long enough anyway, and
am glad to go to the fleet. I under
stand my class will be sent to Norfolk

Dear 'Mother and Father: ?
Havinir some spare time, I will try
to write you my weekly letter. There'
are little news that I can tell you.ex
cept of my first accident which hap
pened while I was at the gunnery
school near Lajaux France, from
where I have just arrived, to the old
Port of Isaoudun to await my oraers
assigning me to duty at the front
with a srniadron. ' Well now to get
back to my little mishap I was up
some 7000 feet shooting at a tarjret
towed by another plane. Everything:
was lovely and I was getting in some
good shots, when all of a sudden, my
engine began to splutter and miss.My
first thought, out of gass tinis
to be correct, the mechanic had for
gotten to refill the tank) I headed
toward the aerodome, but it was too
far away to make withuot power, and
the wind in my face. Seeing that I
could not reach the field, I began to
look around for another place to land.
There was nothing but forests and a
large lake, so I chose the lake as a
likely place to land. You see if I
had landed in the trees I could not get
down unless I had a lader, ha! Com
ing near the surface of the lake, I be
gan to retard my speed as much as
possible, making a stall Ending. I

It costs very little to travel on the
French ; trains, as they are govern
ment owned. I visited BordeauxTours
Blais and Orleans, also several other
little towns of little importnace. I
had been in some of them before, but
until now I have not been allowed to
mention any names.
I don't know how long it will be be- j
fore I get ordered out Perhaps it j
will two days or perhaps two months.

29th will be of interest to many Inde
pendence people, as the "Big Ed. Wal
lace referred to, was a former resi
dent of this city. The article follows:
"Big Ed." Wallace, village presi
dent of Rockville Centre, will go'ta
war. He enlisted in the Navel Re
serves, and was made quartermaster
;ghis makes the third vacancy caused
by war enlistments and war work in
the official family of this village.
President Wallace is in the draft
age and is one of the wealthiest men
in the village. He is a member of the
bar of the State of New York, cash
ier of the Nassau County National
Bank, of Rockville Centre, and is said
to be elated for the Democratic nom-

this summer unless unusual care . is
taken by millers, dealers and consum
ers to protect susceptible cereals.
"Manv of the millers and dealers
who handle the cereals that the food
administation is now requiring as
substitutes have always recognized
them as being subject to insect at
tack to such a degree that it has been
considered poor policy to handle them
extensively during the summer
