Messrs. Hicks, Whitney, Clay and
Whitcornb started for Salem Sunday
In the launch, Comlt. They had pro
ceeded only a short distance down
the river when the engine refused
to respond and the boys found them
selves floating toward the Columbia
as rapidly as the current could car
ry them. There seemed to be no
possibility of escape for the pleasure
seekers. It was either swim or go
on down tho river until such time
as the boat might strike land by
mere accident. Hicks has not spent
many years of his life on the water
and to him it was not an interesting
adventure. To be cast away on an
island like Robinson Cruso or float
on down to the Pacific was not a
pleasant thought.
Just as the excitement waa becom
ing Intense, however, the launch,
Alice, bappened along and pulled the
.boat and Its unfortunate crew back to
land. Mr. Hicka will walk the tixt
time he starts to Salem.
THE CANNING FACTORY
In our brief write-up of Indopend
ence last week we failed to mention
the large canning factory and pack
ing plant located here. The building
was erected some time ago, but it is
not occupied at the present time.
The building is owned by a stock
company and it is to be hoped that
an effort will be made soon to get
the enterprise into hands that will
keep it in operation. It would seem
that if half the fruit wasted in he
fiolds each year could be consumed
In this factory and a market estab
lished for the same, the institution
could be made to yield dividends' to
the satisfaction of all interested.
Suppose the board of directors
would turn the property over to re
sponsible parties without cost for a
term of years and allow them time to
place it on paying basis.
