BAD HABITS
It is well that every boy and girl
and trusts. ut even cue c . ,
in its most extreme form, is but a
ference between the great department
store of the metropolis and the gen
eral store of the country cross-road.
Size is the only distinction. The own
er of transfer lines which carry passengers-
and their baggage from de
pot to hotel is a transportation mag
nate om a small scale. Any man who
has goods which others want and
holds up price thereforeto the limit
of his customers' ability and wil
lingness to pay, is illustrating the
principles of monopoly. Broadly
Bpeaktag, any form of organization
which economizes labor and pro
duces a given result with the least
demand upon man and material is
good. The surplus thus realized be
comes available for other services,
and the general tendency toward a
broadening of industry and opportun
ity. This is not less true because
in many instances the process of re
adjustment is a painful one, bringing
hardships to individual or classes.
Nor is it controverted by the fact
that monopolies and their kin. are
themselves all the benefits of econom
ized labor and material that should
accrue to the public they serve.
But there is a demand for reform
ia the circle of monopolies, syndicates
and trusts, which promises to force
Itself upon the recognition of even
ihe most heedless. The change is
toot coming under the banner of so
.cialism, but it is coming through the
constant appeals of a long suffering
public which has seen with shame
the hardihood in which aggregations
lot capital are permitted to ignore the
daw and subvert justice by bribing
(legislators to frame statutes favor
able to the moneyed interests and
against the best policies of the state
There is a growing necessity for

cess should be based upon, a true and
nnt.i., rharacter. All wasteful extrav
agance and needless habits should be
avoided. Take the advice from those
who have learned from bitter exper
ience. It is a sad fact that enough
money is expended in this christian
land each year for sin.ful practices
to feed and clothe in comfort, If not
luxury, all the inhabitants. What a
nity that any boy should ever pay
a dollar for tobacco or anything not
to his physical betterment. But it
is safe to say that men, chew up hous
es and waste farms and business
opportunities by extravagant use of
their money.
Statistics are not necessary to sub
stantiate this statement. Every boy
old enough to have obtained sense
of reason knows the folly of idle prac
tices. At this appropriate time of
the year let us wish for every boy
and girl in Independence that your
stars continue to rise; have no ret
rograde motion, nor cease to ascend
until high in the intellectual and mor
al zenith, forming happy groupes in
the constellation, of excellence, and
there to shine with clear, firm and
steadfast light through all time t
come.
