Briefs in answer to the demurrer of the Oregon ,& California Railroad com pany to the federal suit begun Sep tember 4, 190'J, to compel the company to sell to settlers land conveyed to the corporation by the terms of the congressional tend grant of 1886 have been filed in the United States circuit court at Portland, thus protecting ths rights of 31)00 interveners in the suit. Eugene is planning a big apple show during the latter part of October or the first of November. It is .planned to place several boxes of expertly packed apples in each show window of all the stores on the principal busi ness thoroughfare of the city, and display them in air attractive manner. Suitable prizes will be given to grow ers who have the best exhibits. This show will be held just previous to the big apple fair in Portland and the best of the local exhibits will be taken to vhat city to compete for prizes there. Notice has been sent to all the rail road corporations in Oregon aside from the lines that make up the Har riman system, to the effect that all figures, estimates and other evidence for determining the physical valuation of the road dn this state must be in the hands f the commission by Sep tember 15. The valuations of the Har- riman lines, that is, the Southern Pa cific, Oregon Railway & Navigation Company and branch lines, has been completed. Newtn Squires, the four-year- old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. 11. Squires, died at the family home in Salem, Sunday. Death was caused bv chicken pox and blood poisoning.
