The total amount of land in the county is 786,495 acres. The total valuation in the county Is $14,811,901 and the amount of tax to be paid is $446,458. The work on the south Jetty has een started with funds raised by the Port of.Sluslaw, and about 1500 feet f the long pier has been completed. t is very solidly built, being con itructed of rocks weighing up to ten tons each. The government has ap propriated $250,000 and $50,000 of this available for immediate use. It is expected to take three years to com plete tho work. The government started this 15 yearsago and appro priated $100,000. but this was Insuf ficient and tho work was stopped. Newton Squires, the four-year- old son of Mr. and Mrs, W. H. Squires, died at the family home in Salem, Sunday. Death was caused by chicken pox and blood poisoning.
