They were grown on his farm near Independence and were excel lent eating. J. W. Webber Is at Los Angeles, having gone there to undergo treat ment for cancer of the ear from which he has been suffering for many years. He departed on his way last Friday, going via Salem. Warren Townsond brought to tills office a few days ago a number of fine apples from his orchard, which are a good specimen of what can be raised in the fruit line in this section. They were much enjoyed by the En terprise family, Mesdames Johnson and Hanna, who have been in Portland several days attending their father, J. D. Irvine, who recently underwent an operation at the Good Samaritan hospital, re turned to their homes In this city Tuesday evening. CHASE WON BY POSSE Horsethlef Is Shot Dead, but "Pal" Makes Escape. KLAMATH FALLS. A posse in pursuit of two horsethieves came upon them near the Callahan ranch, 12 miles northwest of Dairy, and killed one, named Dumoa... but the other, named Kuhl, made his escape. A number of mules and horses were stolen from the country in the vicin ity of Sliver Lake and a posse was or ganized and pursued the thieves. They were trailed to Sprague River, where the trial was lost, but was found again near Williamson river. As the posse came over the moun tains near the Callahan ranch they cane upon the men und called upon them to surrender. Dumoas attempt ed to get behind a tree, but before he, could do so he was shot and killed. His companion succeeded in mak ing his escape and the posse is s'.ill in pursuit.
