Miss Ova Smith Is well enough to
be out again after ft long and serious
Illness. Her many friends are hop
ing for her permanent recovery.
Mrs. E. W. Strong gave ft pleas
ant party to her children and their
friends Thursday evening. Ice cream
and cake were served and a very
pleasant evening spent.
Mrs. Geo. Bennett and sons of Eu
gene came through here for a visit
with Mrs. Bennett's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. V. H. Mack. They are on their
way to Join Mr. Bennett in Canada
where he will farm for a while.

Miss Grace Whttehouse went to
Portland Saturday to meet her broth
er who had Just returned from Impe
rial City, California, where he had
been In a quest for health. His trip
hag been a success as he has been
greatly benefitted. He came to Mon
mouth with Miss Whltehouse and left
for his home at Tillamook Tuesday. ,

The J. V. Smith twenty-eight-acre
fruit farm situated three and a half
miles northwest of town was sold
last week to Geo. NlggH of Silverton.
William Mulkey has disposed of his
confectionery, cigars and tobacco to.
P. H. Johnson and will confine his
business to the bakery and news
stand.
The Home Telephone Company
shipped a car load of telephone poles
to Monmouth last week to be used
in extension work. The company is
Installing a considerable number of
phones at that place.
The Monmouth Odd Fellow fratern
ity celebrated the ninety-first anni
versary of the order Sunday.April 24,
-with appropriate exercises. Rev. H.
C. Dunsmore of Independence made
the address and extolled the virtues
of the Institution. The service was
held in the Evangelical church and
was well attended by members of the
lodge and by Rebekahs. There was a
fair attendance of non-members.

dollars each for violating the game
laws, but upon recommendation of
the warden the fl"e were remitted
upon payment of the cost.
Mallei Thompson, son of Mr. and
Mrs. M. I. Thompson, accidentally fell
while going down the hill near their
home last Wednesday nUht and hl
left arm was broken above the wrist.
Dr. Pfandhoefer was called Immediate
ly and the little fellow was made as
comfortable as possible.
After having beeu fined five dollars
for maintaining a barbed wire fence
In violation of the city ordinance and
given reasonable time to remove
same. W. H. Mathews was again
! brought Into court charged with the
second offense. The Jury brought In
a verdict of guilty and upon default
of the payment of a thirty-dollar
fine. Mr. Mathews was committed to
the city prison to serve a fifteen
days' senteuce.
The case of the State vs. C. O.
Johnson, foreman of the Falls City
Lumber Company, was presented to
a competent Jury Friday, Justice Hub
bard presiding. A complaint was
made by game wardens charging the
company with allowing saw dust to
run Into the Lucklamute river con
trary to the statutes. The company,
instead of pleading guilty In order to
avoid legal procedure, as they pre
viously did, demanded a trial by Jury.
The finding of the Jury was In favor
of the defendant; that the company
operated Its plant as near In compli
ance with the law as possible.
