BALMY SOUTH
Wrd Hill returned Friday from an
extended trip ihrouKh Mexico d

an enjoyable trip, having seen- many
Interesting nights, especially from nn
historical point of view. The Mexl

reached a UlKb state of civilization.
ux their ruins now reveal. The to
pography of the country. Its climatic
renditions. Its vegetation and Its peo
ple are also Interesting, as well as
their manner of living. Among the
places visited were: San Kraiu-lseo,
Stanford University. Los Angeles.
San Bernardino, El I'aso. City of
Alexlco. the ruins of Texcuco, the
pyramids of Cholula, Pueblo, Ven

ver. "There Is a great deal of Amer
ican capital going to Mexico In the
form of syndicates seeking invest
merits." said Mr. Hill, when inter
viewed concerning his travels. "The
onrf tha rhean land seem to
lii . iiro " . r ,
attract them. Some are starting plan-i
tatlons of coffee, rubber, pineapples
and bananas. A person who doesj
not belong to some large company
would stand very Uttle show. He
can not afford to purchase this land
as the titles in the most of the plac-,
es is poor, as It is in all Latln-Amer-lean
countries. Four-fifths of the re
public is worthless. One can not al
ways teil what kind of land he is
getting for his money, because Mex
ico, as well as America, has some ex
cellent land promoters. j
"The only way to Invest in Mex
ican land is to be in a large company
and have competent lawyers to ne
gotiate the deal or one is apt to get
tils fingers burnt. !
"A few of the large cities are mod
ern but others, as well as rural dis
tricts, are a thousand years behind;
especially in agriculture, as the cul
tivation of the soil and the harvest
ing are very primitive. Nearly all of
the tilling is done with a crooked
stick plow, with a stick tied across
the horns of the cattle for a yoke.
"Mexico is an interesting country
to look at but a poor one to live in."
