Jones of this city has been appointed, through Senator Bourne, ti the office of receiver of the land of fice at Roseburg, to succeed B. L. Eddy, whose term of office expires the 18th. inst. The president has con firmed the appointment and Mr. Jones will take up the duties of the office as soon as Mr. Eddy's term expires. The appointment of Mr. Jones to the Roseburg land office is in recog- nition of his valuable services to Mr. Bourne in his election to the United States Senate. He has served three terms as a member of the lower house in the Oregon legislature, and at the 1907 session helped to elect Bourne senator. While living at Toledo, Lincoln county, Mr. Jones in the general elec tion of June, 1902, was elected State representative from that county and served at the 1903 session of the leg islature. He subsequently removed to Independence and in June, 1906, was elected joint representative from Polk and Lincoln. Two years later he 'was re-elected to the same office and during the meeting of the legis lature last winter was one of the most rabid Statement No. 1 members of the lower house. During the campaign which preced ed the organization of the legisla ture last winter, Mr. Jones at one time was talked of as the candidate of the Statement forces for Speaker of the House. The appointment was a surprise to friends of Mr. Jones in this city and it is understood that the office came unsought to him. The news of the appointment contained in the press dispatches was the first inform ation received by either Mr. Jones or his friends. lected cold, all this sorrow, pain, anx iety and expense could have been avoided. This country is now filled with peo ple who migrate across the continent la all directions seeking that which gold cannot buy. Nine-tenths of them are suffering from throat and lung trouble or chronic catarrh resulting from neglected colds, and spending fortunes vainly trying to regain lost health.
