Geer tells of a farmer who once said: "I don't believe in your book learning, study and all that; I'd rather learn by experience." He did. That man a couple of years later lost out as a farmer and moved to town, where he made a very poor living working by the day and doubtless working for men who stud ied and read and thought about their business, and applied in it, as far as practicable, that which the' had learned from books, periodicals and the experi ence of others given therein. It is the men who read; the men who study; the thoughtful men who support the farm journals. They are the men who read books and papers on agriculture, fruitgrowing, poultry cult ure and bee-keeping. They are the men who stand in the front rank; the leaders in their respective com munities. These men have found that it pays to read and study on any subject in which they are in terested and apply their knowledge in their everyday work. 1ft THE ji ES72AD is published for this class of farmers and stock rais ers. Every week it contains articles by men who KNOW. Practical experience is what counts and you get it from others through the Pacific Homestead, published at Salem, Oregon, each Thursday. Sub scription price $1 per year, sample copy free. West Side Enterprise - Pacific Homestead - -The two for $2.00 $1.50 1.00 Remit to either paper. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY The State of Oregon probably can afford a building for Its Historical So clety. There are two many srafters seeking larger salaries and multiplied Uou of offices. It U not strange that you don find them working In thla particular line. They haven't Intelligence culture enough o cause them to tak Interest in historical affairs. They don't know that Oregon haa a history and that Its history is correlated with that of the rest of the country; and they don' care. Their motive vulgar, greed. They want office, and don't want or expect to do any work, Without ability or qualification to do anything, on their own account, and too lazy and worthless to work In the fields or woods, they want to live off the state. But you will observe that among all their schemes, service in promotion of the needs of the HUtorl' cal Society has no place. That ser vice requires Industry, intelligence and learning. But the Historical Society must have a building, or it must quit. It has ac cumulated a vast stor'e ofexcellent ma erial, but it has no home, no means of assorting and preserving its acqui sitions. The state might easily help It and preserve Its work for future ages if the greedy cormorants who are at the capital of the state clamor ing for Increase of salaries and try ing to get more offices created were turned resolutely down. RECOMPENSE Straight through my heart this fact today By truth's own hand is driven: God never takes one thing away But something else is given. I did not know in earlier years This law of love and kindness; I only mourned through bitter tears My loss, in sorrow's blindness. But, ever following each regret O'er some departed treasure My sad, repining heart was met With unexpected pleasure. I thought it only happened so; But time this truth has taught me No least thing from my life can go But something else is brought me. It is the law, complete, subline; And now, with faith unshaken, In patience I but bide my time When any joy Is taken. No matter if the crushing blow May for the moment down me, Still back of it waits love, I know, With some new gift to crown me. Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
