Alfalfa is the coming crop for the Willamette river bottoms. Catlln & Linn have about 3 acres that was cut twice last year yielding good crops at both cuttings. There are oth er patches that were sown last spring which are making good showings. o Rev Henry McCain, newly appoint ed pastor of the M. E. church of this city, delivered an interesting and in- telligen sermon Sunday evening from the text: "Ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you." Rev. McCain s' a student of the school of devlnlty at Salem and, although quite a young man, gives promise of a bril liant future. Pete Linden is engaged this week In packing tUeir household goods pre paratory to removing to Seattle next week, but they contemplate return ing to their old home in Minnesota at a later date. Mr. and Mrs. Linden have made a host of friends during their residence here and all regret their departure. It is hoped that they like thousands of others, will again re turn to this the best country on earth. Mrs. Earnest Townsend was a Sa lem visitor the last of the week. She went to meet a delegation of old time friends from North Dakota who are here looking for homes. o In the eighth grade state examina tion Amanda Hilke and Ella Lawrenc passed in all the branches and Frank Kirkland passed in all but one which he will complete in May. Only the three took the examination. o During the teachers' examination this week Mrs. G. A. Wilcox has charge of Miss Fugate's room in the public school and Miss Mona Nagle presides in Miss McReynold's room. Mrs. Wilcox feels much at home with the work as she was a teacher in the same room for many years previous to her marriage. o The Polk County Poultry Associa of this year for their show. Elmer Dixon of Oregon City has been chos en as Judge. The meeting place has not yet been designated and it is reasonable to presume that as long as the last poultry show was held at Dallas the show this year will be held In Independence. o Miss Clara Purvine left Tuesday afternoon on her way to Portland where she will be for a couple of weeks studying the latest styles In millinery. She will return about the 25th and will open up one of the largest and up to date lines of mill inery ever brought to this city. She expects to show a fine line of Easter goods, also the chic Paris patterns. A first-class trimmer will be in ch arge. o C. G. Long, proprietor of the city meat market will re-open his shop in few days.
