nr..imn fit v One of the most aen-
eational ai!Ulavitn has Jimt been pre
sented bv Frank Hesse, an auorne
of Portland, In which charge arH
made that bring into question me
Identity of the man whose body waa
found at Spjingbrnnk achoolhouse,
near Oswego, on September 13, last.
Hesse has a client, nerntiarni ttaisi
by name, who avers thut the dead
,,. his brother, but thus far
has brought forward to evidence to
prove this supposition.
One phase of the case mat manes
it unusually Interesting Is the ract
thai tho Heart man had $660 In gold
In his pockets. Coroner Holman took
charge of the remains anu uirn.-u
the money over to the treasurer of
Clackamas county.
In less than a week after the un
known man was buried, Mrs. r.mo
B. Robinson, of Hrland station,
Multnomah county, appeared and de
manded that the remains be ex
humed. This was done and she de
clared that the body was that of her
father, F. A. Williamson, trom tex
arkana, Texas, who was visiting her.
In his efforts to secure testimony
to discredit Mrs. Robinson, Hesse en
gaged a private detective to inter
view her.
Hone to Overthrow Prohibition.
r.a Grande Prohibition in Union
v,nntv is ill dire danger. When the
Aar. first became effective it was at
oiroi bv a local brewer. J. Roesch,
who asked for an injunction on the
ground that Sheriff Childers naa not.
Tr,oriv nnsited the notices of elec
tion. The circuit court denied the
ruinost fnr Iniunctlon.
The case rested there, but since
the supreme court has rendered Its
w0oninr derision in the Grant coun
ty case, which is similar in almost
every respect to this one, Roesch
gave notice of appeal to the supreme
court. When the decision is forth
rw,,r it is believed that the local
option law will be Invalidated, as the
Union county instance Is regarded to
fanitv nostine of notices is similar
to that in Grant county.

Roberts Not to Resign.
La Grande A. A. Roberts, re
ceiver of the local land office, whose
accounts are in a muddled condi
tion, stoutly denies he has resigned.
He is, however, out of office on a
two-weeks' furlough on account of
illness.
So voluminous is the task of ex
perting his books that the investi
gation, started two weeks ago, is
hardly under way yet. The special
agent is still silent.

To make the amount oi niuu-v j
which each school district shall re

school founds dependent upon the
number of teachers employed in each
district Instead of upon the number
of children of school age was the
radical change in the manner of the
appropriation of school funds urged
by State Superintendent of Public
Instruction J. H. Ackerman at Pen
dleton last week. He was address
ing the second annual meeting or
school officers of Umatilla county.
Details of another reclamation
project for Umatilla county became
known at Pendleton last week when
It was learned that a syndicate of
Spokane capitalists had contracted
for several hundred acres of r ver
bottom land along the Umatilla river
about 20 miles west of Pendleton.
This section is noted for its fine
fruit, heretofore produced on a small
scale, and it is the purpose of the
promoters of the project to divide
the land up Into small fruit tracts.
Though the land to be developed Is
mostly subirrigated, water will be
Sken from the Umatilla river to re
claim portions that may need it.
