Fire at Monmouth
Radek & Smith's bakery at Mon
mouth was destroyed by fire last
Friday night. It is thought to have
been caused through some defect of
the electric wiring. Owing to inad
equate protection from fire in that
city the department was unable to
subdue the flames, notwithstanding
their prompt response to the call.
It is reported that the firm will re
build, this time of brick. The build
ing was well insured.

the board of equalization will meet at
the county court house at the city of
Dallas, in the county of Polk, state ol
Oregon, to examine and correct the
assessment rolls, to correct all errors
in valuations, descriptions or qualities
of land, lots, or other property or in
correctly assessed as to description or
quantity, or where assessed in the
tame of a person or persons not the
owner thereof or assessed under or be
yond the actual cash value thereof
and to assess all lands, lots and other
property appearing to have been
omitted or that was not assessed.
Petitions or applications for the re
duction of a particular assessment
shall be made in writing verified by
the oath of the applicant or his attor
ney, and be filed with the board dur
ing the first week it is by law required
to be in session, and any petition or
application not so made, verified, and
filed shall not be considered or acted
upon by the board.

Mrs. Augusta M. Powell of Mon
mouth died of cerebral tumor at 9:30
o'clock Monday evening at the Salem
hospital.
The deceased was 27 years of age
and leaves a husband, J. F. Powell,
and two children. She was a daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Mulkey,
well known pioneers. The deceased
had been ill for some weeks and was
brought to the hospital last Thurs
day in an unconscious condition. The
interment will be at the Monmouth
cemetery this afternoon, but as yet
the hour has not been definitely set.

Eastern Stars Visit Salem
Members of the Eastern Star lodge
of this city paid a fraternal visit to
Chadwlck Chapter in Salem, Tuesday
evening. They were royally enter
tained at an elaborate dinner at six
o'clock, after which a fine program
was rendered followed by ceremonies
of Initiation. Members from the
chapter In Dallas were also guests on
this occasion.
The Capital Journal announces that
Senator J. P. Dolliver will not speak
in tnat city. He will be held In San
Francisco too long to permit him to
fill his Oregon dates and he will jump
to Spokane from San Francisco. The
Salem club is attempting to Secure
another prominent speaker as a sub
stitute for Friday night.
