of V ocational E ducation sta tin g th a t
they a r e in position' to offer a course
fo r w omen in H om em aking subjects
such as D ressm aking, M illinery, Child
C are, Cookery, etc., and ask in g him to
g e t such a plan befo re th e women of
th is com m unity. T his is one of th e
agencies u n d er th e S m ith-H ughes act
fo r conducting V ocational Home E c­
onomics.
All vocational w ork is carried on by
m eans of F ed eral m oney, which is
m atched by th e locality, so th e sa lary
of in stru c to rs is paid h alf from th e
s ta te and h a lf from th e m em bers of
th e m em bers of th e class.
T he classes m ay be held in e ith e r
th e afte rn o o n o r th e evening, and in
every case so f a r have been held in
th e high school building because th e

Ja m e s Jo sep h R ussell, who for the
p a st fo rty y ea rs has been a resident
o f th is section of O regon, died a t his
home in th is city W ednesday m orning
a t eig h t o’clock.
Mr. Russell has
been ill fo r th e p ast tw o y ears and
alth o u g h he had rallied fo r a spell,
w as not s tro n g enough to m ake recov­
ery p erm an en t.
N early a y ear ago
he received a tra n sfu sio n of blood
from his old friend, C. Lorence, and
th is stren g th en e d him fo r a tim e.
Mr. Russell w as born n ea r H arp er's
F e try , but on th e Y iig in ia side of th e
line in Londen county.
He was a
son of Mr. and Mrs. Jo n a th a n R us­
sell.
They cam e w est about 1880,
and m ost of th e tim e since has lived
in Polk county on farm s n ea r Mon­
m outh and Independence but recently
fo r a few y ea rs he lived in Y am hill
county.
A bout five y ea rs ago he re ­
tire d from activ e w ork, bought a
place in M onm outh and cam e here to
live.
Mr. Russell w as an Odd Fellow
w ith a m em bership of over th irty -
five years sta n d in g , o rig in ally w ith
th e M onmouth lodge, an d when th e
local lodge building b urned down and
th e order w as disbanded h ere for a
tim e, he tra n s fe rre d his m em bership
to Valley lodge in Independence and
has s.nce re ta in e d his connection.
In addition to his widow, M inerva
Ja n e Russell he is survived by th ree
d a u g h te is an d fo u r sons. They a re :

M rs. Ada McCann of M cM innville,
an d Blanche R ussell of M onm outh;
J . O. Russell of W asco, W. J . Russell
o f O akland, C alifornia, G. L. Russell

Rocky m o u n tain s to th e Pacific.
