C.—S erg ean t Samuel Woodfill, in th e opinion of G eneral P ershing, d eserv es first place on the list of men who displayed o u tstan d in g heroism in actio n in France. U ntil M onday little w as known of th e value of S erg ean t W oodfill, who has been in th e reg u la r arm y for 20 y ears and who w as com m issioned a lie u te n an t d u rin g th e w ar and pro m oted to cap tain for heroism in action. On O ctober 12, 1918, n ea r Cunel, F rance, during the Meuse-Argonne of fensive, S erg ea n t W oodfill, th en a lieu ten an t, cleaned out th re e m achine gun nests, silencing th e guns and killing 19 G erm ans, including one of ficer, and cap tu rin g th ree others. F ortun e sm iled on Woodfill, who escaped w ithout a serious wound, a l though he faced four G erm ans a t one tim e, an unnam ed num ber at an o th er five in a fourth engagem ent, finally killing two m ore with a pick. T hese eng ag em en ts followed each o th e r in quick succession. W oodfill had been se n t out by his brigade com m ander to locate th e em em y's line. He actu ally located it when he cam e across th e first m achine gun nest, but could not be ce rtain and pressed forw ard a fte r killing th e four men com m anding th a t gun. H e had ju s t killed five G erm ans in a th ird m achine gun nest and was about to jum p into the pit with draw n revolver when tw o o th e r G erm ans tu rn ed th e ir w eapons upon him at sh o rt range. F ailing to kill them with his revolver, W oodfill seized a pick which w as lying close by and brained both of th e enem y. How W oodfill m anaged to keep un d er cover so long was th e su b ject of much com m ent around th e w ar de p artm en t recently. He received the congressional m edal of honor and was tw ice decorated by F ran ce and once by M ontenegro.
