ENGLISH RACE HORSE
That celebrated race horse. Eclipse,
pi which died Feb. 28, 17811, at the ripe
a ape of 23 years, received tils name on
a
account of his being born during an
eclipse of ttie sun, and It became curi
ously significant and appropriate when
in mature life be was found to pass
nil contemporary horses as regarding
sj>eed.
Eclipse was bred by the Puke of
a. Cumberland, a brother of (Jeorge til.
a ami afterward became the property of
Dennis O'Kelly, who on his death be
queathed tlie animal, along with all
Ids brood mares and other horses, to
Ids brother Philip. For ninny years
ai Eclipse lived In retirement from the
turf, but was In other ways a source
S of considerable revenue to Ids owner
on account of the many visitors who
ai came to see the renowned hero of the
race truck who was passing his lust
days at Clay Hill near Epsojn.
In those days It was liot the custom
to Insure the lives of animals, and
tlie fact that Eclipse was Insured for
un enormous sum only made bis popu
larity the greater. When It became
necessary to remove him he was so
worn out that a carriage had to l>e
especially constructed to carry hint.
The secret of tils Immense success
was revealed by the autopsy, when it
was discovered that his heart was of
unusual size, as It weighed thirteen
pounds.—Chicago Journal.

How Two Impecunious Reporter* Se
cured Neat Sum From the “ King
of Wall Street.*'
Every minute that a womnn spends
In worry, weaken* the body for It*
dally tight for health. It odds age.
It causes deep furrows to appear on
ttie forehead. It Injures the digestion
and robs life o f all pleasures and
peace. So If you wish to keep your
good looks, don't worry.
Work gives Incentive, and thus life
and health, to the organs of the body.
It strengthens our will, teaches us
patience, perseverance and the eour
age to endure. It has been the sal
vatlon of many. The homely duties
thut are performed by the house moth
er each day, the sweeping, cooking
and home caring, are wholesome du
ties which lead to health and >»trength.
But If women allow their dally
tnsks to fret and worry them, they
lose all of the benefit they otherwise
would gain. It Is not always the ac
tual work that wears out the nerves
and tem|>er and ruins the disposition
It is the spirit In which the work is
done which allows worry to creep in.

Earth Is Slewing Down. t
Happily for our convenience, the
process Is extremely slow, but all tlie
same the fact Is that the days are
getting longer.
This does not refer to hours or
daylight Increasing with the advancing
year, but to days as timed by the
revolution of the earth on Its axis.
The earth’s power of rotation, says
a writer In tlie Popular Science
Monthly, Is growing weaker and as a
result Its revolution on its axis Is
slowing up. Which means, of course,
that the day Ls lengthening.
An epoch must eventually arrive
when the day will be equal In length
to the year; that Is, to the time It
takes for us to revolve about the sun
Then the earth will always turn the
