Items of Interest Oic-gon s Higher Institution of Lumber industry has Permanent Prospects With the largest lumber mills and logging camps in Southern Polk county in operation an era o f activ ity that seems certain to last for many years has begun. The largest concerns have purchased supplies to last 50 years, have constructed log ging railroads, and equipped small sized cities in preparation for a long period o f active operation. The present inactive period in Pa cific coast lumber industry is held to be only temporary, and while the period o f readjustment is under way no time is lost in preparation for efficient manufacture. They await an adjustment in rail rates to enable competition with the product o f southern mills. One o f the largest and best equipped lumber mills in the state is in operation at Valsetz, in the heart o f the Siletz basin. The plant is owned by the Cobbs & Mitchell company who began operation last lights. Valsetz has a large recrea October. tion hall and a general store. The 160 ft. Dunsmore arrived in Independence last Sunday from a tw o year enlistment in the subma rine branch o f the navy. “ While I have no intention o f reenlisting, my experiences were pleasant and agreeable and well worth while in a certain sense” , says Mr. Duns more. “ On the submarine you get in closer contact with your officers than pe rhaps you do in any other branch >f the navy or *army. The crew is necessarily small in num bers, and 1 am frank to say that the officers on the boats on which I served were a fine lot o f fellow s” . Mr. Dunsmore enlisted in New York and spent his time largely on the Atlantic and in the Gulf o f Mexico, winding up with a subma rine cruise which landed him in San Pedro, Cal. Mr. Dunsmore is not fu lly decid ed as to his plans fo r the future. He expects to remain here with his father, Dr. H. Charles Dunsmore, temporarily at least. Loafing does not appear to be one o f his charact eristics, as the day following his ar rival here he was functioning as a check boss in the Homer Wood hop yard.— Enterprise.
