husband two years ago, is believed to
have caused her death.
The contest of the will of the late
Henry L. Plttock, founder of the Port
land Oregonian. who accumulated a
fortune that reaches nearly 18,000,000,
will be carried to the Oregon Btate
supreme court by Mrs. Caroline P.
Leadbetter, daughter of Plttock.
B. W. Kern of Portland is in the
Benton county Jail awaiting a grand
Jury Investigation on the charge of
grand larceny. Kern Is charged with
having stolen 11055.62 from the Amer
ican Railway Express company, for
whom he was a railway messenger.
Prominent residents of southern
Oregon have petitioned Governor 01-
cott to extend executive clemency to
W. E. Butler, under a penitentiary
sentence for the killing of McDonald
Stewart In Jackson county. It is
claimed that he acted In self defense.
Reorganisation of the child welfare
commission of Oregon presages a
prompt and thorough investigation of
Portland baby homes with a view to
ascertaining the reasons three such
homes had refused to accept recent
charges from the Oregon Humane so-
clty.
Mrs. Edward F. Mathus, operator
of a children's nursery In Portland,
was found guilty of a brutal and vi
cious assault on three-year-old Edua
Romansky by a municipal court.
Judge Rossman sentenced the woman

struction of a 350,000,000 terminal ex
change building and the unification of
