The German wheel of revolt
made just about one revolution and
stopped at the place of starting.
To a man determined to knock a
proposition one excuse serves u
well as another,

approaching battle.
Viewing the preparations being
made on every hand, a heavy mor
tality among ground squirrels may
be expected shortly.
This is a good season of the year
to plan for a lawn next summer.
The prospects are good that we will
have plenty of water and it is self
evident that the appearance of the
city will be much improved with
more well kept lawns. ,
There are few people these days
who do not have cause to complain
over high taxes, but it is well to
remember that other things are
high also. When a loaf of, bread
costs twice what it used to cost and
clothing, shces, groceries and other
necessities are similiarly high, it is
not to be" wondered at that taxes
should also go upward.
The action of the commercial club
of the city of Dallas in passing a
resolutions commending the millage
bill should and does meet with ap
preciation on the part of citizens of
Monmouth. Dallas has acted gen
erously in the matter and its action
is in keeping with the vision and
judgment that has given that city a
position of importance on, the map
of Oregon.
We are told that breweries and
distilleries can, with little expense,
be fitted to turn barley and corn in
to syrup instead of into intoxicating
liquors. The alcohol in the liquor
comes from fermented sugar in the
grain. Wheft the process is stopped
at a different stage than the one by
which it is turned to alcohol, a syr
up, nourishing and pleasant to the
taste is the result. Thus will be
provided a market for. the grain
formerly used in the liquor business.

If good milch cows could be
bought for $5 a piece the price of
milk would be reduced and city
folks would all be happy. So why
not pass a law. providing that no
milch cow shall be sold in Oregon
for more than $5. Or let's go a
step farther and pass a law that no
milk shall be sold in Oregon for
more than 5c a quart. But the
trouble is that if this law was
passed, then tie dairymen would
ship their milk to Washington,
Idahp or California, and then where
would the Oregon babies get their
milk..
That's what is wrong with the
the proposed 5 per cent interest
rate bill. If it should pass, Mort
gage Companies and Banks would
simply loan their money outside of
Oregon', and where would Oregon
merchants, farmers, manufacturers
and home builders get money with
which to finance themselves.
Oregon banks are interested in
Oregon development, but with gilt
edje commercial paper and munici
pal and railroad bonds being sold at
a price to yield as high as 7J per
cent'very few bankers will loan
their money at 5 per cent.
